Department of Education Shuts Down D.C. Offices Amid Massive Workforce Cuts Allegedly Tied to Elon Musk’s DOGE
In a shocking move, the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) temporarily shut down all its offices in the Washington, D.C., area for ‘security’ reasons, following reports that nearly half of its workforce is being slashed. The drastic cuts are rumored to be linked to financial shifts influenced by Elon Musk’s DOGE, though official confirmation remains elusive.
Offices Locked Down, Employees Told to Work Remotely
A notice sent to employees by James Hairfield, from the DOE’s office of security, facilities, and logistics, informed staff that offices would be closed as of 6 PM on Tuesday. Employees were instructed to collect their work laptops and transition to remote work starting Wednesday, March 12.
“Employees will not be permitted in any ED facility on Wednesday, March 12 for any reason,” the email read.
Despite mounting inquiries, a spokesperson for the Department of Education has yet to provide an official response regarding the closures and layoffs.
McMahon: ‘Standard Corporate Practice’
Linda McMahon, the department’s secretary and former CEO of WWE, addressed the shutdown in an interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham.
“We didn’t want a situation where some of those permanently let go would show up to work tomorrow morning,” she stated, calling the shutdown a ‘standard corporate practice.’
McMahon reassured that laid-off employees would be granted access to the offices to collect personal belongings and say their goodbyes before finalizing their departures.
Sweeping Layoffs Align With Trump’s Long-Standing Agenda
According to sources, a ‘reduction in force’ notice is expected to be issued on Tuesday, cutting nearly half of the DOE’s 4,000-employee workforce. These layoffs align with former President Donald Trump’s long-standing campaign promise to dismantle the Department of Education and redirect its $80 billion budget to state governments.
“When I appointed Linda, I told her, ‘I hope you do a great job and put yourself out of a job,’” Trump previously remarked.
The Future of Student Loans in Limbo
One of the DOE’s most significant functions—managing federal student loans—could soon be transferred to the U.S. Treasury Department, a move McMahon previewed last Friday.
“I think he [Trump] certainly intends to sign the order. This is something he has been crystal clear about since the campaign,” she told Fox & Friends.
Despite the shake-up, McMahon assured that discussions with Congress are ongoing to ensure continued student loan assistance.
“This is not a matter of turning off the lights and walking away,” she told NewsNation. “We’re working closely with Congress to ensure students’ needs are met.”
Public Reaction and Uncertainty
The sudden shutdown has sparked public protests outside the DOE headquarters, with civil servants and education advocates rallying against the layoffs. Meanwhile, speculation continues to swirl regarding the alleged financial influence of Elon Musk’s DOGE in this decision—though no official source has confirmed this claim.
With uncertainty looming over thousands of employees and the future of federal student aid, all eyes are now on the administration’s next move.
