First Human Patient Receives Brain Implant, Says Musk

Success has been recorded with first person to receive an experimental brain implant from Neuralink, the neurotechnology company founded by billionaire Elon Musk, according to a social media post by Musk on Monday.

The implant surgery, conducted on Sunday, was part of a clinical trial by Neuralink to test the safety and functionality of its brain-computer interface technology. The company received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last year to begin human trials.

“Initial results show promising neuron spike detection,” Musk stated in his post. The Neuralink device aims to enable people with paralysis to control digital devices using only their thoughts.

The clinical trial, called the PRIME Study, is evaluating the wireless brain implant and surgical robot on human subjects. The study is focused on assessing the safety of the implant and robot-assisted surgery.

Neuralink did not provide further details about the implant recipient or trial results when contacted by Reuters.

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Neuralink was fined for violating U.S. Department of Transportation rules on the transportation of hazardous materials.
