Google.org Pledges $15M to Train U.S. Government Workers in AI Skills

Washington, D.C. — At the Google Public Sector Summit, Google.org announced a major initiative to enhance AI skills across the U.S. government workforce. The organization has committed $15 million to fund AI training programs, focusing on responsible AI practices for government employees. The funding will be distributed between two organizations: the Partnership for Public Service and InnovateUS, both dedicated to upskilling public sector workers.

AI to Enhance Government Operations

Artificial Intelligence is already revolutionizing various sectors of government, from improving healthcare services for military personnel to optimizing water conservation and disaster relief efforts. With the increasing role of AI in public services, Google.org’s initiative aims to prepare government workers to handle these technologies responsibly.

$10M to Establish the Center for Federal AI

Of the total investment, $10 million will go to the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit organization that has been working to foster AI adoption in federal agencies. This funding will support the creation of the Center for Federal AI, set to open in Spring 2025. The Center will provide a platform for developing AI leadership and talent at all levels of the federal government, offering training programs for everyone from interns to senior executives.

The Center will feature a leadership program focused on AI, a specialized AI internship program, and initiatives to build a community of AI leaders within the federal workforce. The Partnership has already trained over 550 senior officials from more than 50 government agencies across 35 states.

Empowering Government Workers with AI Skills

Leaders from both organizations praised the new initiative. Max Stier, President and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, described AI as “today’s electricity,” highlighting its transformative potential for the public sector. He emphasized that Google.org’s investment would enable the organization to expand its AI programming and research, ultimately empowering government agencies to better serve the public.

Beth Simone Noveck, Founder of InnovateUS and Chief AI Strategist for New Jersey, echoed this sentiment, noting that government workers need access to the latest tools and technologies to improve public services.

A Larger Effort to Shape AI in the Public Sector

This $15 million investment is part of Google.org’s broader $75 million AI Opportunity Fund, aimed at helping Americans develop essential AI skills. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into government services, the efforts of organizations like the Partnership for Public Service and InnovateUS are crucial in ensuring that public sector employees are well-equipped to navigate the future of AI-driven government operations.
